Bangalore needs you! Unite & ride to make Bangalore 'cool' again

Long long ago.. actually, not so long ago, there was a nice long road with huge trees on either side and students and elders alike used to cycle to their school/college/workplace. The same could be said about most of the roads in Bangalore until one fine day when the world realized what a 'cool' place Bangalore is and the rest is history.
Cliched as it may seem, a lot of people say Bangalore has gotten warmer in the last 10 years.

So, here's our teeny weeny bit to reclaim the Bangalore that we know of. Join us as we spread the message of cycling in Bangalore.

This edition of Critical Mass is registered at UNEP as one of the World Environment Day activities. Watch this space for our event to be featured.

How do you convince someone that riding hills is fun?

My neighbour's bike sits rusting on his balcony, once a well-used Marin. He's pretty fit and tells me he rode it all the time when he lived in London. But as soon as he moved down to Brighton, he stopped. Why? The hills of the Downs.

And he's not alone. London cyclists talk about Highgate Hill and Muswell Hill with respect but down in Brighton, you can't go for a five-minute ride (unless you just hug the coast) without hitting an incline at least equal to those. And then there's another one. And another. If you want to ride on the south coast, you've got to start enjoying hill climbing – and, of course, the rush of the descent. But hills put so many people off. How can you encourage them into the saddle – or back into it – without coming over as some advocate of masochism?

Watching the Tour de France guys tear through the mountains of the Pyrenees at the weekend might serve as an inspiration, but for most of us they are from another planet, their body-fat statistics and weight-to-power ratio forbiddingly skinny. To be a top climber apparently, you need to weigh roughly twice in pounds what your height is in inches: so if you're 6ft (72 inches), you should weigh 144lb (10st 4lb). That's pretty skinny.

You can work on your technique to make it easier, and therefore more pleasurable, and there is a lot of advice out there. Here's some of it:

• Relax! Tensing up, craning your neck at the slope ahead and white-knuckling the handlebars will just drain your strength even more.

• Stay in your seat as much as possible (getting out of the saddle gives you more power but uses about 12% more energy, so on a long hill it's going to wear you out).

• Sit up as high as you can, and sit back on the seat.

• Find a gear where you can keep a steady rhythm of about 70-80rpm.

• Try to keep your heel parallel to the ground on the downstroke – don't stand on the pedals with your toes as this means you're using fewer muscles and have less power.

You could get one of those battery-assisted bikes if it is all too much like hard work. Or, as was suggested in a very funny piece I once read, you could remove all inessential body parts (kidney – you only need one; teeth; all body hair, nails etc) to make yourself that little bit lighter.

But at the end of the day, hills are a state of mind. What advice have you got for getting your head around them?

This short film features Alfred Bobe Jr. and Fatimah Durkee. The film spins a visual ballad between the two cyclists experiencing the city in their own unique ways. Both cyclists are city dwellers who amidst the chaos of the concrete jungle have created a private and peaceful psychological space as they traverse the streets. They are both alone and yet they are both very much aware of each others presence. The film speaks to the harmony with one's environment that can be found while riding a bicycle in a city and the synchronistic connection we can have with those we have not even met. The short was commissioned by Hutchinson tires.

A Dreams That Came True

I was not so sure if i will able to complete this but yes i have and also conquered my dream and i am quite happy that i could achieve this number is such a short time. Yes the 2000 KM is up on my cycle and had to also change the chain on the bike its been a roller-coaster ride on this and still have a freash thought of the long rides that i had and also the rides to office it seams to have keep ed me calm all the month. This is all i have to say and hope to see you all for a ride in our city Bangalore

Good Time I hope in India everyone had a great Diwali this year

Ha everyone sorry about the long absent from my blog but have been busy lately but yes i have returned and was on a hunt for a Road Bike as my Weekend rides are getting longer and longer every weekend (mostly on paved rodes ) and i am on a hunt again for a bike i have see a few road bike and have had lots of good feedback about it and also road some of the high end model but now have to pick on up i am also glad to tell you that the weekend rides have reached 100 Km Plus and now doing it with ease with out any bad back pain or an problem in my body after these long rides i feel more satisfied now day then ever. I am also having a plan worked out for myself to get some longer rides done on my upcoming Roadbike. Its hard to find a good road bike as my options are limited ( in India ) and getting a Roadbike shipped from outside the Country will make a big hole in my pocket. Now keeping this in mind i have had a good look around at the bike available to me not much but just right for me and for my pocket

First come the Merida 880 - 16 (2009 Model) look nice and with some O.K specification but i feel a little skeptical about this bike on how will it take my weightand also the gear ratio was a little to high for me. I had a chance see this bike in action and it was like a new chapter in cycling for me and this what brought me closer to RoadBike. I must say i was watching it with full amusement that i fell way behind the rides as i was on my MTB. Details are below -----

The Second Come is the Merida 901 - 18 (2009 Model) there is a not a lot of different but there a change in the Fork which was made out of Carbon and the Breakset of Sora it handled quite well and the responsive was very nice i road this for a kilometer or so and it felt good. The specifications on the bike was good but not the best and i felt it will need some good upgrades once i had bought it but will i want to spend that extra buck or just go for a good bike with good specification instead of spending on extras now will think about that but hear are the details below -----

The Forth is the entry level Trek 1.5 looks nice but the parts are a little too old on it looks like TREK has downgrade the parts on this bike have heard a lot of people that they had to upgrade the parts after the purchases but the price tag on this bike is really nice thats why its on my list and also the wheel set that you get is a killer and nice too. But keeping the complaints in mind i will need to work out the problem with my friends. Details below

The Big Three Number ( Update On The Merida Matt TFS 100 - V )

Well yes this is the day i will remember for the rest of my life and a good reason too I have completed 500Kms on my Merida Matt TFS 100-V and its been a hell of a ride and GOD !! I cannot ask for more. I have taken it for long rides like 60 + on weekends and also a lot of off roads as well. Its taken me less then a month to do this i think i now can do some more long rides and get myself ready for it. Now coming to the bike its has over excited my expatiation's and i love it i have take care of my baby and she is taken care of me also till now i have had only one puncher and that's good enough for me. The frame can withstand a number of abuses and still work like a charm the gears did need cleaning that's a regular thing for a cyclist and the shocks work like a it was newly installed and trust me they too can a hell lot of abuse as well. Now most of all the rides that i have had was going to work doing some shopping and meeting friends and family how really wanted to see this bike. Now the bike does get a lot of people starring and trying to inquire about the bike in signal stops or just on the footpath that's when i start to push the bike when there is a lot of traffic. From the day that i got my bike it has been an whole new way how i look at life ever science. And looking at this in my office people have asked me don't you feel tired after the ride i say "NO" but i feel more better and feel fresh. Having seen this two close friends of mine at the office have decided to take up cycling to work and would love to join me for one of the rides.Now one last thing a VERY BIG THANKS TO ALL OF MY FRIENDS IN BIKEZONE AND BBC who has encourage so many people like me who do not know how important is it to save our home that we call EARTH and i am happy that we are all here to stay and do our bit.

Review - Merida TFS - 100 V Team

Hello everyone its nice to see you reading this small review about the new cycle that i bought after a lot of disappointing mistakes finally i was going for a good bike and yes let me start with the most important thing

FRAME

My frame has the Team color its pretty good and nice paint job as well now the TFS Meaning Techno Forming System Tubes 6061 and its written on the frames as well but over all i can say its the best frame i have ever seen. It gives you that solid feel as your riding and Dame its design was the best too... like i could cut threw the wind and its the frame that makes people look at it twice. Next comes the

Gears

The Gears was giving me a problem in the beginning but after some tuning it was working really nice yes the Rear Derailleur as you can see its a DEORE and its ( 8 ) which is good and very smooth while shifting and the Front Derailleur is Alivio actually which is also pretty good.But all i can in this category there is a balance between performance and maintains free problem in the GEARS.Moving along is the Handel bars

Well the Handel bars are really good its all what you need the side bars at the end is great for uphill rides and the Shifters that you can see is raelly good and fast in changing and reliable too and of course its an X mission as well as the seat and as you can see i have also installed a CATEYE on the bike as well. Now last but not the least the Front fork The Tire and the Break Set

The Suspension was good at rough roads and the features that it had was also nice for me it was the first time i have seen these kinds of Shocks
the Left has a Pre-loader and and measure of the pre-loader and the Right is the Lock Out and its great when you doing up hill as then you can focus all you power on the peddle up now comes the Tires as good as they can give you speed and Grip when turned the other ways and not tubeless but will upgrade when i need it this is also from X-Mission.

Now the Break Set that i got from this was pretty good and was better perfoming then my old Disc Breaks that i was using its the Shimano Alivio and boy they can stop you dead in your tracks but still loved all the features this bike has to offer
